Launched in January 2009, Cartoko is a map database covering maps of any kind. Currently there are 2,488 subject pages with 8,481 maps, and the database is constantly growing. Presently, we are in the process of shifting the platform for Cartoko to our new site on WordPress. During this process, the wiki will remain available to allow access to all the great content we have so far.

Recent Additions

Atlas of the Historical Geography of the United States (1932): Over 500 often detailed maps covering American history from its earliest beginnings to around 1930, well-researched and mapped. Many subjects include time-series maps.

Pennsylvania county maps: More than 400 Pennsylvania county transportation maps from PennDOT dating from 1911 to 2009. Various Pennsylvania county maps from 19th century atlases have been added too.

Area Handbook Series: Almost 500 maps from the country studies and area handbooks published by the Library of Congress, dating from the 1970s to the 1990s.

Atlas of Canada: Hundreds of excellent color maps from five printed atlases, published between 1906 to 1995, plus maps from the current online version.

A Little About Cartoko

Cartoko will soon be the place you go to first when you need to find a good map or geospatial data, regardless of format or subject. As a recently launched web site, there are still some rough edges, and as a wiki, some of those edges might always be there. Also, there are far too many maps to be listed here already, so you might find some areas that are pretty empty. Consider that your invitation to add some content. Unlike Wikipedia, you must register to add content, but it's an easy process and no injuries are likely to result.

Featured maps serve as examples of recent materials and collections added to Cartoko.

Map of the Public Roads in Adams County, Pennsylvania (1916) Pennsylvania, through its Dept. of Transportation and predecessors, began producing highway maps about a century ago. Early maps like this one were colorful and detailed. While the detailed level of information has only increased, the amount of color comes and goes. This is one of many such maps recently added to the site, dating from 1912 to 1991, and also including the latest 2009 county highway maps. All of these (and a few more from 1992 to 2005) are available as PDFs from the Pennsylvania Dept. of Transportation Historic County Maps page.
